Hawkesbury Sand Sculpture Festival

Hawkesbury Sand Sculpture Festival

Posted 2013-12-13 by Sharm Jayfollow

Sand sculpting is serious competitive stuff. This I learned when I decided to spend a day exploring Hawkesbury and its surroundings one December morning.

Gargoyles, mermaids, hobbits and dragons were all lined up parading for all to see. With crowds flocking around, it actually seemed like a set from the next ‘Hobbit' movie. But it was not. The gargoyles, mermaids and all kinds of mythical creates were lined up along the banks of the Hawkesbury river for an international sand sculpture competition.

Hawkesbury is turned into a sand artists paradise at the end of each year, and stays so from December through to January. The theme I am sure changes every year. Therefore you won’t find mythical creatures every time you visit. Nevertheless, it truly is a sight to behold.

I was amazed as to how sand can be made in to such works of art. If you are one like me who wants to get the most of any experience, you should ideally be heading Hawkesbury way twice. Once to see the artists from all over the world diligently carving and molding these amazing works of art. Next to see the final products lined up. And of course the later visit will give you the chance to find out if the sculpture you voted for was crowned champion.

The fun didn’t end for me just by looking at sand art. After making my way through these amazing sculptures, I decided to try my skills at creating a work of art myself. The tent that is erected beside the sculptures with various sand art options for you to try out, gave me the perfect opportunity to do so. Though the sculpture I did with great excitement didn’t hold a flame to the professional works of art on display, however I did have fun creating the modern art which I myself named as ‘who knows what.'

Having had a ball playing in the sand pit, treating on fairy floss and going on fun rides till they were dizzy; my kids were well and truly entertained. The sand art competition puts Hawkesbury into a quite festive mood, with enough to keep kids and adults entertained.

The Hawkesbury sand sculpting championship is an event worthy to follow.
