Ten pin bowling is one of those ‘old skool’ sports that has been given a vibrant facelift to attract young people all over again.



That’s so true about AMF Bowling Southgate at Sylvania, where you’ll always have loads of fun. No matter where you look, there’s something to amuse people of all ages.

Open from 10am until late and with 24 lanes operating, it’s easy to fit in a few games of 10 frames.



The place is very noisy. I don’t know how people work there every day and not go insane. There’s the ever-present sound of balls rolling down a lane with the inevitable crash of toppling pins. Plus there’s loud music and the cacophony of arcade machines. It’s not the place you’d go for an intimate night out on a first date.



Pick up your bowling shoes from the counter and your names get listed on the overhead monitor. Gone are the days where you had to keep your score on paper. The monitor will tell you whose turn it is to bowl, and automatically keep your score as well.

The lanes have bumpers for the inexperienced, and they automatically pop up for bowlers who request them.



The lights go down, and you bowl under ultra violet lights creating a great, almost surreal atmosphere.

The bowling balls are a variety of colours. For example, if green’s your lucky colour, there’s a ball just for you.

The serious bowlers can join a league. Ask at the alley.

There are always kids birthday parties, and they’ll do the catering for you.

The arcade games take tokens, and you can claim prizes based on how many tickets you win.



There’s a café for the adults who want to relax, while the kids run amok and bowl until their arms fall off. There’s also a fully licensed bar.

They have special prices during school holidays. For example, you can bowl all day until 5pm for $16.90. Otherwise, adults: one game for $14.90 or two games for $21.90; kids, students and seniors: one game for $12.90 or two games for $19.90. Check the prices at the AMF Bowling website before you go.
