David Jones Christmas Windows

Anyone who has ever been in the Sydney CBD in the festive season will know that every single year, an abundance of crowds are drawn to the corner of Elizabeth and Market Streets. This is because of the David Jones Christmas window display.



A yearly display of puppetry, the windows are a treat for adults and kids alike. The theme for 2013 (as at the time of writing this) celebrates 175 years of David Jones. Viewers are treated to a moving, visual history of the store, from the early days of art galleries and David Jones’ bridal department; to Queen Elizabeth II’s visit.



The window displays have been in construction for around six months, and when you visit them you can see why. Attention to detail is the key, from the tiny David Jones shopping bags being carried by figurines, to the glistening sheen on a fake turkey. A personal favourite this year is the food scene, a tribute to the famous David Jones Food Hall, where chefs preside over pastries, iced cakes and other cooked goods; where one even struggles with a fish.



The windows are definitely something to take the kids to. A crowd of children can almost always be found around the windows, with their faces pressed up to the glass as they excitedly point out parts to their parents. It is infectious, and would be impossible for anyone to feel like a Grinch in their presence.



No doubt a favourite amongst the youngsters this year, is the scene depicting the David Jones toy department. Nutcrackers beat on drums in a row, and a teddy bear swings another one. This is simply toy wonderland come to life. As with every other year, Christmas carols are piped through speakers, adding to the festive feel as you take in each of the windows.



Other scenes this year include the David Jones choir, and a group of revellers at a Christmas ball being played to by a string orchestra. Windows are even inscribed with gold lettering, asking questions for children to answer - such as how many sausages are hanging on the wall in the food scene.



The David Jones window display is a tradition for many Sydney-siders, which has to be seen to be understood. Every year, it offers just a little touch of Christmas magic, delighting people of all ages. It truly wouldn’t be a Christmas season in Sydney without a visit to see them.
