Kings Comics Sydney City
A shop with a great vibe and fun products
After receiving a number of recommendations that I head to Kings Comics on Pitt Street in the Sydney city CBD, I finally made my way there recently. I've only just gotten in to comic books, manga and graphic novels, and was a little intimidated by the thought of going to a place that specialises in them. I needn't have been. Kings Comics is a fresh and friendly place filled to the brim with comics, books, memorabilia and other fun pop culture stuff.
Shelves packed to the brim with comic books
A huge collection of Disney figurines decorates the window
An easy location to get to if you know your way around the city. Kings Comics is a gold mine for a number of things. First, there's the obvious: comic books. The store is absolutely teeming with them. They are divided by genre and very easy to browse, even for someone like me. I prefer mine in the graphic novel or collection format, and apparently I'm not alone because Kings has shelves absolutely packed with them.
Tee shirts come in every size and style, like this Doctor Who and Super Mario Bros mashup.
They even have superhero themed guitars
For someone who has only a handful of comics that I follow at the moment, I found it very easy to find my favourites. Not only that, but I found tie-ins and new versions of them that I didn't know existed. I'm a big fan of the Archie comics thanks to childhood nostalgia, and Kings has beautiful vintage-inspired hardcover volumes I've never seen anywhere else. I know I'll be back to buy them. Another series I've been a fan of, Fables, was displayed prominently on the shelves, and I found a tie-in novel to go with them that I'd not known about before.
Theres a huge selection of manga for those who are fans
My personal favourite find was this collection of vintage inspired Archie Comics volumes
There are even comics that will appeal to those who don't know if they like comics or not. A version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol where all the characters are zombies made me smile, and at 50% off it was a real bargain. But it's not just comics, graphic novels and manga at Kings Comics. They have a huge range of memorabilia and merchandise. Ranging from the various comic book superheroes to popular TV shows like Doctor Who, The Walking Dead and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, you can find t-shirts, mugs, toys, shot glasses and even guitars. They also have the biggest collection of Disney character figurines I've ever seen. I mentally did birthday shopping for almost everyone I know while there.
Funko Pop figures stacked high
A sale sign is always a welcome sight
During my browse I wasn't approached by anyone who worked in the store, but this didn't come across as unfriendly. Rather, it seems the staff are happy to let you browse for as long as you want in peace. I was there quite a while, and given that I'm new to this comic book world and just wanted to suss things out, that was really good. I've had multiple people tell me that if you are after some help and approach the staff, they are very friendly and welcoming. I would believe it, too, as they all seemed to be laughing and having a good time.
Numerous gift ideas for the comic book, movie or TV fan in your life.
Kings Comics is a fun place to browse, and I could easily spend a long time there. I could easily spend a lot of money there too, but not because it is overpriced - this is just because there are so many fun and unique things to fall in love with.
